Description

FRIESLAND WALL CLOCK, a so-called STAARTCHIPPERTJE
A miniature tail clock, made around 1830

Case
The oak case is of traditional shape with a removable arched hood with a glazed door flanked by two pillars with brass capitals and bases. The tail is pierced in the shape of a star wheel. The hood is surmounted by three gold-leaf veneered vase-shaped finials.

Dial
The arched painted iron dial has a village view in the arch with a windmill, whilst there are four figures in the corners depicting the four seasons. There are two angels on clouds in the centre. The time is indicated by a pair of pierced brass hands on a white chapter ring with Roman numerals.

Movement
The 13-hour going movement is constructed between three brass bars in a cage, formed by iron top and bottom plates and four turned brass pillars. It is driven by a brass cased lead weight via a pulley and endless chain with a brass ring as counter weight. It has a going train with verge escapement and pendulum fixed to the verge and a striking train, controlled by an external countwheel. It sounds the hours fully and the half hours with one stroke on a bell. In addition, the clock has an alarm driven by weights. The alarm is set by a small hand on an Arabic chapter ring on the hour hand.
