French stick barometer
Description
Made by Ingenieur Chevallier around 1830
Case
The rectangular rosewood-veneered case is straight and austere. There is a Torricelli tube attached to the case with a beautifully shaped reservoir, protected by a square cover. In the middle of the case are two thermometers, left an alcohol thermometer end right a mercury thermometer.
Register plates
The barometer and thermometers have silvered brass register plates. The maker has signed the barometer on the barometer register plate in the following manner

The atmospheric pressure is indicated by the mercury meniscus with a sliding setting hand with vernier on the silvered brass scale, left and right of the tube in French inches (26-30). The corresponding weather conditions are indicated on the left-hand side on a sling scale to allow adjustment to different altitudes.
The thermometers indicate the ambient temperature in degrees Centigrade and Réaumur.
